J. Newton Cohen, Sr.

Rowan County citizens have lost a leader and a friend. J. Newton Cohen, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010.  Mr. Cohen served as a Rowan Commissioner for sixteen (16) years and as Chairman for nine (9) of those years.

When Mr. Cohen left office in 2000, the Board paid tribute to his public service in several ways including adoption of a Resolution to bestow to him the title of Honorary Rowan County Commissioner for life and naming the Commissioners’ Meeting Room, the J. Newton Cohen, Sr. Room.  The Board also presented Mr. Cohen with an original watercolor painting of the County Administration Building. Mr. Cohen was instrumental in the preservation of the county’s current administration building.  In 2008, the Board chose to further honor Mr. Cohen’s years of service by naming the County Administration Building the J. Newton Cohen, Sr. Rowan County Administration Building.
