Commissioner Coltrain is a practicing Agronomist working with farmers in the production of the food and fiber that all people must have to sustain their lives. He and his family live in the Salisbury community of Rowan County.
He grew up on a small sustainable family farm. He obtained his B.S. and Masters Degrees in Agronomy from N.C. State University. During his 30 year career with the NC Department of Agriculture and NC State University he also obtained the accreditation of being a Certified Public Manager. He has used this knowledge to provide leadership to the identification, development and implementation of basic agricultural research projects on four research stations located in the Coastal Plains and Piedmont sections of NC. He had the privilege of producing and coordinating research involving all but three of the agricultural commodities that are produced in NC. Performing these responsibilities has provided him the opportunity to work with citizens in all walks of life throughout NC.
He continues to be involved with St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury Rotary Club, Waterworks Visual Arts Center, the Agricultural Advisory Council and the NC Society of Farm Managers. He has served in leadership roles on the Rowan County Zoning Board of Adjustments and the Salisbury Rowan Economic Development Commission.
