Animal Control staff will assist people coming to the Shelter in choosing a suitable pet helping to ensure a good match between the adopter and the animal. An agreement with the Rowan County Animal Shelter is signed by the adopter, who must be 18 years of age or older. The agreement states that the adopter will ensure that the animal is examined by a veterinarian within 3 business days of the adoption (This must be done since there is no veterinarian on staff at the Shelter). This veterinarian visit must include a health checkup and all needed shots. The adoption agreement also confirms that the animal will be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption or at the appropriate age or of good health.

The minimal cost for an adoption at the shelter is $70.00 which is a down payment towards the spay/neuter fee. Adopters will be responsible for any money owed to the veterinarian over the $70.00. The fee cannot be applied towards any other procedure except spay/neuter and is only applicable for the adopted animal. The vouchers issued at the time of the adoption are only valid for a thirty (30) day period or thirty (30) days after the animal becomes of the appropriate age to be sterilized. The vouchers given at the time of the adoption are the originals and cannot be replaced. Only the pink portion of the voucher is worth money at the veterinarian's office. This adoption fee/agreement applies to the general public as well as rescue organizations.

A refund will only be implemented in the event that the animal you adopt, after receiving veterinary treatment, dies, is euthanized or is recommended to be euthanized by veterinarian, within thirty (30) days of the adoption. If the adopted animal is found to have a serious illness and the adoptor elects to treat the illness, the veterinary cost becomes the responsibility of the adoptor. Exchanges can be made within five (5) days of the adoption. Exchanges must be completed the same day the animal is returned and can only be exchanged for an animal that is available for adoption on that day.

No refunds will be processed unless all receipts given at the time of the adoption are returned along with a note from a veterinarian indicating the animal's condition and/or treatment.

No exchange will be processed unless all receipts given at the time of the adoption are present and available.
