The number one cause of death in children is unintentional injury. The National Safe Kids Campaign was begun in 1988 to promote safety awareness and to stop these injuries and deaths. Safe Kids focuses on children from birth to age 14. State and local Safe Kids groups study local injury data. Once a common mechanism of injury is identified, prevention strategies are devised to reduce the injuries.
SAFE KIDS-Rowan is part of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, the first and only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury -- the number one killer of children ages 14 and under. Over three hundred state and local SAFE KIDS coalitions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico comprise the Campaign. Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., Sc.D., is chairman of the Campaign.
