Summer Reading Challenge
Summer Reading Challenge
The Friends of RPL will once again be a sponsor of the Summer Reading Challenge, a community-wide reading initiative organized by the Libretto Book Club. During this election year, the club has chosen the theme "Prose and Politics."
For its fourth season, club members have chosen four books-two fiction and two nonfiction. The novels are The Appeal by John Grisham and The Zero Game by Brad Meltzer. The nonfiction includes Black Men Built the Capitol by Jesse J. Holland and Divided America by Earl Black and Merle Black. Rowan Public Library has copies of all four to check out.
In a new activity this year, the Challenge will include a three-time discussion group in July on one of the books, Divided America. Led by Dr. Michael Bitzer, Catawba College Assistant Professor of Political Science, the group will look at the emergence of the power struggle between conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats. These discussions are free and open to everyone at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 8, 15, and 22 at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center.
People interested in discussing all the books will gather at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 16 at Waterworks Visual Arts Center and the F &M Trolley Barn for a reception and forum.
