Martin Luther King Jr.African American/Black History

African American Almanac - An e-book provided through NC-LIVE.  "The African American Almanac provides historical and current information on African American history, society, and culture in 28 topical chapters."

African American Odyssey - An amazing site from the Library of Congress. This exhibit includes depictions of the long journey following the Civil War towards equality in employment, education and politics, strategies used to secure the vote, recognition of outstanding black leaders, and the contributions of sports figures, black soldiers, artists, actors, writers and others in the fight against segregation and discrimination.

African Americans in History - This University of Georgia site offers brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history. Coverage begins in the late 1700's with Benjamin Banneker and Sojourner Truth and ends with the present day accomplishments of former U.S. Senator Carole Moseley-Braun and Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia A. McKinney.

African Americans in Science  -  An excellent collection of biographies, indexed alphabetically or by profession.

AFRO-Americ@'s Black History Museum - Explore interactive exhibits from the first slave revolts to the first Black Army Air Corps pilots of World War II and the Black journalists who covered their missions.

Baltimore Public Library's African American InfoCenter - Extensive collection of annotated links

Birthplace of a Leader - Atlanta-based CNN presents this interactive online tour of the Atlanta neighborhoods where Dr. Martin Luther King lived and worked

Black History Pages - Large collection of black history web sites

Make a Mask - From PBS Kids, create your own African mask

The Underground Railroad - National Geographic presents an interactive journey through the famous escape route

Twentieth Century History:

Best of History Websites - Check out this excellent collection of reviewed and annotated history websites, searchable by topic (e.g. World War II, etc.)

The Food Timeline - Guide to historic U.S. food/commodity prices.  Mainly twentieth century but some information refers to earlier records.  Many of the references are for print sources that will need to be used in a library.  

Historic Events and Birthdays by Date - Enter a date to learn about the events that took place on that day. Birthdays are featured. 

History Channel's This Day in History - Enter a date and category to learn about the events that took place on that day

How Much is That? - Track and compare the purchasing power of the dollar through time;  track inflation and exchange rates

Kingwood College Library American Cultural History - Presents both an overview and brief facts about each decade in the twentieth century

Pearl Harbor - From National Geographic. A multimedia, interactive attack map uses photos, narration, and animation to present the events of December 7, 1941. Large variety of other resources also available.  

Nineteenth Century History:

Lewis and Clark - Web site explores the historic expedition with interactive maps, archival images, animation, and more.

Distinguished Women of the Past and Present - Biographies of women writers, educators, scientists,

National Women's Hall of Fame - Search alphabetically for detailed biographies of U.S. women "whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value for the development of their country."

National Women's History Project - Search their excellent collection of Women's History links.
