FAQ's

1.  What is the procedure for recording a deed? See an attorney. After the deed is drawn and properly notarized, take it to the Tax Assessor’s office for the "green stamp" which is a verification of the Tax Map and Parcel Number. If you mail the deed to us, the Tax Map and Parcel Number must appear on the first page of the document. The fee is $14.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each additional page. Excise tax stamps are based on $2.00 per $1000 value of the purchase price. Also, the grantee’s address must appear on the first page.

2.  What is the procedure for recording a deed of trust/mortgage? See an attorney. After the documents are drawn and properly notarized, present the documents to the Register of Deeds. The recording fee is $24.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each additional page.

3.  What is the recording fee for powers of attorney, etc.? The recording fee for all other land record documents is $14.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each additional page.

4.  How do I obtain a copy of my deed, deed of trust/mortgage, power of attorney, etc.? You may stop by the Register of Deeds office to obtain a copy for a fee of 50 cents per page. You need to know the name the property is in and the approximate year it was purchased or recorded. For a deed of trust/mortgage, you need to know the Grantor. For a power of attorney, you need to know either the grantor or grantee and the approximate year of recording. Certified copies are $5.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page. If you know the Book and page of the documents, you may request it by mail.

5.  Can the Register of Deeds tell me who owns a property at a specific address? Contact the Tax Assessor’s office at 402 North Main St., Salisbury for this information. As a rule, phone calls cannot achieve results.

6.  Can anyone access the information contained in the Register of Deeds office? Yes. All information in the Register of Deeds office is public record.
