Child Care Centers

Rowan Public Library brings the library experience to preschoolers in child care centers through the Stories To Go program. Creative and dedicated library staff members, Ms. Vicki and Ms. Ashley, drive the Stories To Go vehicle to preschools, daycares and Head Start Centers throughoutms vickie and ms ashley with the stories to go bus Rowan County to present a 30 minute literature based program. After enjoying story time, children board the brightly decorated, child-friendly Bookmobile to check out books to take home and share with their families.  Teachers also benefit by checking out resource materials, storytelling dolls and activity kits to use in their classrooms.  Over a thousand children, ages 3-5, in child care centers across the county participate in this innovative early literacy program.  Over the years, Rowan Public Library has been fortunate to receive many grants to support the program including continuing Smart Start funding from  Smart Start Rowan.

 Home Child Care  

Rowan Public Library offers literature-based programs to family child care homes in Rowan County with Stories To Go to Home Child Care.  Library staff member, Ms. Jane, visits each home monthly and ms. jane reads to children in her home child care programworks directly with the children.  Using her extensive experience in preschool education and natural talent, Jane brings books to life, makes science exciting and nursery rhymes real.  The Library also provides suggested follow-up activities and other materials to enrich the child's daily experience.  This popular program is made possible through Smart Start Funding from Smart Start Rowan.

 

 

Books To Grow

Rowan Public Library provides a literacy program to preschool students enrolled in the More At Four classes within the Rowan-Salisbury School System through Books To Grow (BTG).  Library staff ms. suzanne reads to children in the books to grow programmember, Suzanne Roakes, coordinates this take-home bookbag program that promotes daily “read-aloud” sessions between these pre-kindergarten students and their parents.  Suzanne organizes and leads workshops to educate parents on the importance of routinely reading to their young child.  Parents are given tips and ideas on how to make books enjoyable and memorable.  A BTG bookbag with 3 developmentally appropriate children’s books and a journal are loaned to participating families on a weekly rotation.  Each week the bag is returned and a new set of books are loaned to the family.  Suzanne visits each classroom twice a month to lead fun and interactive book sharing times with the children.  This wonderful program is made possible through Smart Start Funding from Smart Start Rowan.
