During the awards ceremony held on May 13th, Deputy Sheriff W. D. Smith was honored as the Rowan County Sheriff's Office Optimist Officer of the Year. The event was held at the Holiday Inn, Salisbury and is a yearly event sponsored each year by the Optimist Clubs of Rowan County.

Smith has been employed with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office since July of 1998 and currently serves as a Master Deputy assigned to the Community Safety Division. In this position, he is responsible for drivers' education classes in local high schools, child safety programs, and traffic control classes for local volunteer departments.  Smith also conducts Community Watch Programs, participates in the Rowan County MADD Chapter, and serves as the Sheriff's Office representative ;to the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program. In addition, he is a member of the Special Response Team (SRT) and serves as a traffic and drug interdiction officer.

 

Josh McHone

During the awards ceremony held on May 20th, Deputy Sheriff J. W. McHone was honored as the Rowan County Sheriff's Office "Rookie" Officer of the Year. The event was held at the Salisbury Rotary Club, Salisbury and is a yearly event sponsored each year by the Rotary Club of Salisbury.

McHone has been employed with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office since May of 2006 and currently serves as a Patrol Officer assigned to D-Squad, Patrol Division. In this position, he lead the agency in drug arrest by a patrol officer last year and is continuing that pace again in 2008. Deputy McHone has encountered more DWI arrest than any other officer on his squad and is leading in the number of criminal warrants served. Josh's supervisor noted that he "displays extreme pride and professionalism and is an intelligent, hard working officer whose self-initiated activity consistently exceeds expectations."
