The Red Fox is a very successful animal. In addition to being common in North Carolina, it has the largest geographical range on any living carnivore and is continuing to expand its range. Foxes are animals of keen vision, hearing and smell. They can run at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.
They are predators and average eating 5 pounds of prey per week. Their diet includes rodents, rabbits, other small mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Their excellent hearing, sight, and sense of smell is something that they depend on. The smell sense helps them locate food and vision and hearing protects them from predators. Their urine has a strong smell similar to a skunk and they use it to mark their territories.
