A great way to avoid crowded indoor spaces this Black Friday is to “Opt Outside”, a movement created by outdoor equipment retailer REI and subsequently backed by local, state, and national parks. Rowan County offers access to a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Collectively, there are more than 50 public parks, greenways, and waterways available for outdoor enjoyment throughout Rowan County.
Muddy Sneakers, an outdoor science education program that works with fifth-grade public school students, has put together an excellent list of activities for families including a Finding Fall Scavenger Hunt (PDF) and Creek Observation Bingo (PDF).
Geocaching is also a great way to get outside and explore. It is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. There are more than 1,000 geocaches in Rowan County and surrounding areas, including some in Rowan County parks. Visit www.geocaching.com to learn more.
Rowan County offers some challenging disc golf courses that are a great way to stay socially distant while having fun. Ellis Park (view Ellis Park Course Map PDF) and Sloan Park (view Sloan Park Course Map PDF) have full 18-hole courses. Other local courses include Vietnam Veterans Park in Concord, Lake Corriher Wilderness Park in Landis, Kelsey Scott Park and Catawba College in Salisbury, and Boone’s Cave in Lexington.
Kids in Parks TRACK Trails include hiking, biking, geocaching, paddling, nature, disc golf courses, and even adventures you can do in your own back yard. Rowan County’s only designated TRACK Trail is located at Eagle Point Nature Preserve on beautiful High Rock Lake. In addition to getting prizes in the mail, you can TRACK your adventures in your own online nature journal and see how many trails you’ve visited, how many miles you’ve hiked, and more. Visit www.kidsinparks.com to learn more.
Whatever your adventure this Black Friday, please remember to recreate responsibly:
