Teens at RPL South had a blast making these creepy planters from repurposed doll heads.
|
Teens 'Creep It Real' with Doll HeadsTeen programming in October included a Halloween activity that invited the teens to create their own planters...with a creepy twist! Teens used the heads of old dolls, craft supplies, and hot glue guns to make these terrifying homes for succulents, moss, and more. While the program produced hilariously spooky results, it also taught teens the value of using old, worn-out objects, like well-loved dolls, to create new projects with purpose.
Weekly teen programming continues through the first three weeks of November at all RPL locations. Teen programming (along with standard programming for children) will be on hiatus beginning December 1. To see a complete list of program opportunities for teens ages 11-17, visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org or call Young Adult Librarian Amanda Brill at 704-216-8268.

Although Rowan County is just now settling into fall, Cards for a Cause is already underway with its 2022 campaign.

|
|
|
Cards for a Cause 2022 Off to a Strong StartAlthough the days are just beginning to grow chillier and shorter, Cards for a Cause, an annual campaign led by RPL Children's Associate Tammie Foster, is already well underway.
The program, which originally launched in 2015, aims to get holiday cards into the hands of service members and veterans located in the local area and beyond. RPL staff recognized how many service members and veterans may not be able to see their friends and family members during the holidays for a wide variety of reasons and wanted to share some extra cheer with them during the holiday season. When she was asked to lead the program a few years ago, Foster took the opportunity and ran with it, steadily increasing participation each year.
In 2021, Cards for a Cause generated 4,521 cards, setting a new high for the number of cards returned and delivered to service members and veterans during the program.
There are a few ways interested RPL customers can participate in Cards for a Cause:
1. Visit your most convenient RPL location to complete a card or two onsite — all locations have free card-making materials available to the public.
2. Fill out or create some cards of your own and drop them off at any RPL location.
3. Take a handy bundle of blank cards to complete at home and return them to any RPL location later.
Cards for a Cause will accept new cards through December 16. To learn more about Cards for a Cause, contact Tammie Foster at 704-216-7728.

SLNC 'Library for the Blind & Disabled' Gets New Name ChangeThe State Library of North Carolina (SLNC) Library for the Blind and Disabled has now become SLNC Accessible Books and Library Services (ABLS). This special public library offers materials for checkout for patrons who have difficulty reading or handling standard books. This may be a permanent disability or a temporary state of affairs. For patrons who have difficulty seeing. handling, or turning the pages of standard print books, there are free services available from SLNC to assist.
SLNC’s Accessible Books and Library Services is more than a place to check out books. SLNC ABLS division offers community and tailored services to entertain and engage folks with abilities that a standard library cannot necessarily meet. Audiobooks with player devices adapted for easy handling with plug and play ability are offered for those with limited fine motor skills. Braille books are offered for those who read braille. Classic books in large print are available for checkout. eAudiobooks are available for download in a variety of formats.
The SLNC ABLS goes above and beyond by offering magazines, descriptive videos, books from around the world, foreign language quarterly publications, and braille on demand books for download. All of these resources can be delivered to patrons free of charge through the US Postal Service or an internet connection.
Free SLNC cards also offer a number of podcasts hosted by Podbean including Talking Book Topics, Braille Book Review, Heard Any Good Books Lately?, and Notable on Noble that provide reviews, commentary, and previews of what is new in their collections. The SLNC also hosts a special section on locally-published books and audiobooks by North Carolina authors. These titles are downloadable or available to stream through the browser for easy access on smartphones, tablets, and other devices. They even have older issues of Our State magazine downloadable for free.
The application is short, but it does ask for a certifying signature from a competent authority, such as an educator, social worker, case worker, counselor, rehabilitation teacher, certified reading specialist, school psychologist, superintendent, or librarian. You can check out the SLNC's ABLS site for more information, news, and offerings at https://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/about-us/accessible-books-and-library-services.
Existing RPL customers interested in the services provided by the SLNC's ABLS program can contact Adult Outreach Librarian Paulette Stiles at 704-216-8259 for assistance or more information.

RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations
Ever wonder what books library staff are reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by the staff of RPL East Branch!

Addison Bevis, Library Associate
The book I just finished reading is called Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. I wanted to read something a little spooky for Halloween, and this was perfect! I finished reading it in just one sitting. It's a graphic YA anthology of original short horror stories. Emily Carroll's art style reminds me of a mixture between Tim Burton and N.D. Stevenson (author of Nimona), and Carroll's style often helps tell the story more than the narration. Every story reads like a grownup fairy tale; they're haunting and memorable, but never too gory. My favorite story was about a shy man who is suspicious of his charismatic brother.

Sydney Smith, East Branch Supervisor I recently finished reading Jennette McCurdy's memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died. While the title and cover image of the book are a bit shocking, it is 110% worth picking up and reading. I have read over 50 books this year, and I would call this one perhaps the best book I have completed so far.
When I was a tween in middle school around the early 2000s, iCarly, the television show featuring Jennette McCurdy as the lovable tomboy character named Sam, was all the rage. I was the same age as Jennette and her costar, Miranda Cosgrove, at the height of the Nickelodeon show's popularity. I loved watching the show and relating to their characters. However, underneath iCarly's fun and whimsical storyline was a very harsh reality for actress Jennette McCurdy.
In her memoir, McCurdy explores her career as a Hollywood actress, including the emotional and physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother in order to enter the spotlight as a major television star. Throughout the book, McCurdy explores her life from early childhood and eventually reaches the major turning point in her life so far — the death of her mother. If you want a read that is emotional, heart-wrenching, hilarious, relatable, and insightful, place a copy of this book on hold today. It is extremely powerful! A bonus: if you listen to the audiobook version like I did, you can hear it read by McCurdy herself.

Jailene Aguilar Valdovinos, Library AssociateI recently finished reading Crying in H Mart: A Memoir by Michelle Zauner. It is a truly heartbreaking novel about the author’s experience of losing her mother to cancer. Zauner is Korean-American and discusses her attempts to strengthen her relationship with her Korean culture through food after her mother’s passing. My experience reading this book felt very personal and relatable in so many ways. I absolutely recommend grabbing a copy of this book.

Charlene Horne, Children's AssociateA book I recently finished is Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild. A female therapist who counsels mentally ill and depressed individuals seems normal to everyone around her, but she has committed three previous murders. When her husband is found murdered, all eyes in the story turn to her as the most likely suspect. A twisted plot evolves around the main character, leaving the reader guessing "whodunnit" all the way up to the end of the book. If you are a fan of suspense and thriller novels, I recommend adding this one to your "to be read" list.
