A Letter from Friends of RPL President, Jennifer Hubbard Dear Friend, If this letter finds you feeling grateful to Rowan Public Library, read on. If you’re not sure how to demonstrate that gratitude, please keep reading! Friends of Rowan Public Library is a volunteer fan club of sorts, one I’ve been honored to cheerlead for a handful of years. The cost of showing how much you love your local library remains $10 for an individual, $15 for a family, $25 for a literary or civic organization, and $100 for a patron or business. Please visit our website, www.friendsofrpl.org. You may also donate at your local circulation desk. This membership will be good through March 2026. The Friends’ biggest cause is the Children’s Summer Reading Program, which happens at all four library branches. Individuals and businesses who give $500 by April 15 will be cited as official sponsors. This year’s theme is “Color our World,” and those who donate $200 or more will be recognized as theme supporters. Please know we’re grateful for donations of any amount—you’re investing in the future of Rowan County. For the Future –Wendell Berry Planting trees early in spring, we make a place for birds to sing in time to come. How do we know? They are singing here now.
There is no other guarantee that singing will ever be. With thanks from the Board of Directors, Jennifer Hubbard, President Robert Jones, Vice-President Gregory Hill, Treasurer April Everett, Secretary Cyndii Owen, Bookshop Manager Barbara Corriher Melody Moxley Duane DeBerry Melissa J. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. The program will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to Friends of RPL members. Memberships may be renewed or purchased on-site at the event or ahead of time. The cost begins at $10 per year for an individual membership. Cash or charge is accepted. Wineka and Whisenant have recently published books, and Parker-Smith has edited, designed, and assisted with several recently released titles. The program will include a Question & Answer session, and audience involvement is encouraged. Refreshments will be served following the program. The coordinated festivities are part of the NC Science Festival, which was founded in 2010 and is the first statewide science festival in the United States. Through a series of community-based events held in April, the festival celebrates the economic, educational, and cultural impact of science in the state. Participating locations hold a wide range of events, from hands-on activities and science talks to expos and performances, and all share a common thread: showcasing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics exploration. Events are held all throughout North Carolina as libraries, schools, museums, and other community centers come together to learn more about science. Will Morris, Adult Services Librarian I would first second Alexus House’s recommendation from last month's newsletter. We Used to Live Here (2024) is a great horror read! But since she took that one already, I will offer instead Kate Alice Marshall’s What Lies in the Woods (2023). Marshall usually writes YA, but this adult mystery/thriller is packed with suspense and filled with twists to keep you turning pages until late in the night. The story centers around a pair of girls who survived a brutal attack in the woods when they were tweens. Or so they thought, until events unfold about fifteen years later that call the entire event into question. Did they falsely accuse the person they say attacked them? Was the attack perhaps more premeditated than they thought? Did the attack even happen at all? The novel’s title is very clever as well because the story is all about what physically lies in the woods (a body, in this case) but also the lies that the girls told and continue to tell about what happened. I can’t recommend it enough.

Paulette Stiles, Adult Outreach Librarian I recently read Lisa Scottoline's The Truth about the Devlins. This book was a captivating read with a lot of good character development with an intriguing mystery to unravel. One of the book's storylines touches on family relationships surrounding addiction and the toll it takes on everyone affected. A second storyline tells a fictional account of a true case involving the tragedy of human testing on inmates for profit. The book was so compelling and enjoyable, I read it in one (rainy day) sitting. I had never read Lisa Scottoline's work before but I will check out her other books now.

Sara McCraw, Library Associate I recently enjoyed The Secret of Honeycake by Kimberly Newton Fusco. This story is about a girl named Hurricane who is sent to live with her aunt in the city during the 1930s. Hurricane has suffered many losses and difficult seasons in her life, but manages to overcome them with the help of her new friends and family. I really enjoyed the book, and particularly enjoyed the stray cat named Moonpie who makes an appearance in the story. I would recommend this book to animal lovers and those who want a heartfelt story about a family who becomes stronger through challenging situations. It reminded me somewhat of Charles Dickens' works – where orphans find love and acceptance through their estranged family members.
