Friends of RPL Welcomes New President

A Note from Former Friends of RPL President, Jennifer Hubbard: It has been my honor to serve as president of Friends of Rowan Public Library for the past six years. I have loved cheerleading for the library, and now we have the ultimate cheerleader at the helm: Barbara Corriher. A volunteer extraordinaire and retired teacher, Barbara enhances many non-profit organizations in our community with her can-do spirit and wisdom. Thank you, Barbara, for graciously agreeing to lead the Friends through our next chapter.

Alternative Bookshop Access: A Note from Bookshop Manager, Cyndii Owen

We have received information that the entrance to the Rowan Community Center (previously West End Plaza) at the Board of Elections office will close soon. It will not reopen until the Health Department construction concludes in 2026.

Below is a map showing the alternate entrance for the public to use. The new main entrance will be where the fountain used to be (at the roundabout where the flag poles are). We will post this map, and the closure information signs at the Rowan Community Center doors and on the A-frames along the concourse.

There will be an added Emergency Exit in Unit Q (next to the Board of Elections training room). It will be labeled and the gate will be rolled up when it is ready. To learn more, call 704-216-8240.

Coursera Now Available Through Rowan Public Library

Now through December 31, 2025, Rowan Public Library cardholders can enjoy 90 days of free access to Coursera through a pilot program made available through the State Library of North Carolina.

Coursera is a global online learning platform offering courses and certificates from top universities and companies. With over 300 partners, including Stanford, Duke, Google, IBM, and Meta, Coursera provides a wide range of subjects and formats, including courses, specializations, and certificates. Degree programs require additional payment and are not included in the pilot program.

The Coursera program will allow registrants to learn in-demand, job-relevant skills to secure their first job, improve career advancement, or transition into a new field. According to the Coursera Learners Outcome Report, 77% of Coursera learners report career benefits including new skills, increased pay, and new job opportunities.

To sign up for a free account, fill out the registration form using your active Rowan Public Library card. Registrants will be directed to the Coursera website to sign in or create an account. After signing in, registrants may select the course(s) they wish to take. Although this is a pilot program, after 90 days, a user’s progress is saved – they won't lose their work. If seats are still available, you can register again for another 90 days. Alternatively, users can continue learning by subscribing directly through Coursera. Users who do not log in or engage with Coursera after 30 days will have their access removed to allow space for others.

For more information about Coursera, visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org or call 704-216-8240.

RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations

Ever wonder what books library staff have been reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by RPL Headquarters' Youth Services Staff!

cover of book desert song with illustrations of a house and animals in a desert nighttime scene

Wendy Campbell, Youth Services Supervisor

I recently enjoyed the picture book Desert Song by Laekan Zea Kemp, illustrated by Beatriz Gutiérrez Hernández.  The sun sets the pace in the Texas desert as cicadas, coyotes, owls, and a Latine family keep time until a musical celebration unfolds under star-filled skies. This title is an ALSC Notable Book, and a Tomás Rivera Book award winner celebrating Latine culture, music, and Hispanic language.  I enjoyed the book's central message describing how each family member makes an important contribution to the music they make together, and that it all flows together in a way that is timeless and in tune with the sounds of nature.

cover image of Terry Pratchett's book Going Postal featuring an illustration of a mail carrier on horseback

Beth Bentley, Children's Outreach Librarian

I recently read Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. After his execution in Ankh-Morpork, conman Moist Von Lipwig is given an ultimatum to save the city's Post Office or receive a more permanent death sentence. He soon discovers there is more to the failing of the service than undelivered letters and the sudden deaths of the former postmasters. Moist must deliver on the promises he makes, like his life depends on it.

This novel is great beach read as it is light and quick-paced. Pratchett's witty and playful world building takes the comfort of understood reality and turns it on its side. I would recommend this title for logophiles with a silly sense of humor.
book cover image of the first rule of punk featuring a young girl jumping into the air holding a microphone

Jacquelyn Loy, Children's Outreach Associate

I recently read Celia C. Pérez's The First Rule of Punk. This book is a middle grade novel that follows Maria Luisa's (or, as she prefers, Malu's) journey as she explores her identity as a Mexican American and a punk. Malu's mother wishes she would take a greater interest in their Mexican heritage, but Malu feels she has more in common with her punk rock-loving white father. This conflict is exacerbated when Malu and her mother move from their home in Florida to Chicago due to her mother accepting a new job.  At her new middle school, Malu finds herself at odds with the school's dress code, its anti-punk principal, and a popular girl who challenges Malu's Mexican identity by referring to her as a "coconut." However, she overcomes these issues with the help of her new friends and a specific coffee shop owner who introduces Malu to several Mexican and Mexican American punk rock bands. Interspersed throughout the text are Malu's zines, which helps readers get a clearer image of Malu's struggles and how she views her world.

book cover of impossible creatures featuring a boy looking out over the side of a ship as a big red dragon soars by

Amanda Decker, Children's Associate

I recently read Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell. This juvenile fiction title details the story of the day a boy named Christopher saves a drowning baby griffin from a hidden lake. Little did he know, that action would change his life forever.

It's the day he learned about the Archipelago, a cluster of unmapped islands where magical creatures of every kind have thrived for thousands of years — until now. And it's the day he met Mal, a girl on the run who desperately needs his help. Mal and Christopher embark on a wild adventure, racing from island to island, searching for someone who can explain why the magic is fading and why magical creatures are suddenly dying. They consult sphinxes, battle kraken, and negotiate with dragons. But the closer they get to the dark truth of what's happening, the clearer it becomes: no one else can fix this. If the Archipelago is to be saved, Mal and Christopher will have to do it themselves.
