Friends of Libraries Week Coming SoonRowan Public Library will be spending the week of October 16-22, 2022 celebrating its Friends of the Library group as part of the 16th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. The Friends of Rowan Public Library were established in 1969 and work hard to raise funds for the RPL system. The group’s efforts resulted in a complete renovation of the library in the early 1970s, plus a variety of other projects, programming seasons, equipment purchases, and beyond in the years following.
"Friends groups exist nationwide to step in and help their local libraries when ends don't meet, raising money and offering support to overworked, underpaid staff," explains RPL Friends president Jennifer Hubbard. "Our library here means so much to so many, and the Friends volunteer behind the scenes to make sure all four Rowan County branches continue offering essential programs to the community." Additional members of the Friends of Rowan Public Library Board include Barbara Corriher (vice president), Cyndii Owen (treasurer), April Everett (secretary), Melissa Oleen (ex officio), Gary Freeze (ex officio), Duane DeBerry, Mary Frances Edens, Robert Jones, Melody Moxley, and Susan Waller. To learn more about becoming a Friend of Rowan Public Library, visit www.friendsofrpl.org to sign up online, visit your most convenient RPL location, or call 704-216-8240.
National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association with approximately 4,000 personal and group members representing hundreds of thousands of library supporters. United for Libraries supports those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, and brings together library trustees, advocates, friends, and foundations into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries in the 21st century. Paramedic Allison Smith teaches teenagers at RPL South the basics of performing compression-only CPR using training mannequins.

Teens Learn First Aid Basics at RPLTeen programming in September included an instructional session by retired Cabarrus County EMS paramedic Allison Smith. Smith, who has over 30 years of field experience, taught teens at RPL Headquarters, East, South, and West some basic skills they can use to potentially save someone's life in an emergency.
Teens learned how to perform the basics of compression-only CPR, how to call 911, how to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED) machine, how to stop a bleeding wound, how to treat bug bites, and how to treat burns. Participating teens also had the chance to ask questions and get information about various medical scenarios.
The program was a success with nearly one dozen teens walking away from the sessions with new knowledge and skills they could potentially use to save someone's life in an emergency situation.
Weekly teen programming continues into the fall at all RPL locations. To see a complete list of program opportunities for teens ages 11-17, visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org or call Young Adult Librarian Amanda Brill at 704-216-8268.

Creek Week 2022 Storytime Brings Families OutdoorsRowan Public Library helped launch the countywide week-long celebration with a Creek Week Storytime and Creek Exploration at Lake Corriher Wilderness Area on Sunday, September 18. The storytime led by RPL South children's librarian Stephanie Reister kicked off a week full of programming and activities for families to enjoy all around the county in celebration of Rowan's annual Creek Week, which was recognized September 18-24, 2022.
For this event, RPL partnered with Muddy Sneakers, an environmental education program that works with public school students to bring children closer to the natural world. After the storytime, representatives from Muddy Sneakers led participants into the creek found in Lake Corriher Wilderness Area. Children found all sorts of critters native to the area, such as crawfish, mayflies, and dragonfly nymphs. Thanks to all children and caretakers who participated in this fun and educational storytime event!

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage MonthNational Hispanic Heritage Month is here! Celebrate the many contributions made to American society by great Hispanic writers, inventors, leaders, scientists, and more.
Officially celebrated September 15 — October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.
To celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, RPL will have multiple displays across its different branches celebrating the written works of great Hispanic-American authors. The children's monthly scavenger hunt will teach children and their families different facts about a variety of Hispanic countries around the world.
Stop into RPL, pick up a great novel written by a Hispanic-American author, participate in the scavenger hunt, and learn more about the wonderful ways Hispanic-American people have contributed to society. Melissa Oleen, Library DirectorI just started the very readable non-fiction work Going to Church in Medieval England by Nicholas Orme. So many of my favorite works of English literature reference "livings," parishes, chapels, benefice(s), chaplains, patrons, and so on. I wanted to see how this all came about and changed over the years.
Orme goes into detail about how early parishes came into being after the fall of the Roman empire, the various ways boundaries were established, who they served, and how they were supported. As a bonus, a list of technical terms is included as well as lovely, useful illustrations throughout the book.
An interesting fact I've learned from reading this book: early chapels could be divided into at least three categories based on their outreach and may or may not be affiliated with a parish. I have a feeling Jane Austen’s Lady Catherine De Bourgh would have erased any evidence suggesting a cult chapel-of-ease was ever located within her parish!

Alesha Woods, Communications Associate I recently finished reading Alice Feeney's Rock Paper Scissors. I enjoyed this thriller so much! This story kept me intrigued, and I wanted to know more and get to the bottom of all the secrets within the story. Feeney does an excellent job setting the story's mysterious and spooky tone, and then she drives it home with twists that still boggle my mind!
The story follows a couple, Adam and Amelia Wright, who win a getaway weekend trip to a tiny, isolated chapel-turned-cottage in the middle of Scotland. Things have been wrong with Mr. and Mrs. Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win the trip, they think it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can’t recognize friends or family, or even his own wife.
Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts – paper, cotton, pottery, tin – and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a seriously creepy, sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller novel with lots of twists and turns!

Laurie Lyda, Library Services ManagerI’ve been reading Lana Harper’s Witches of Thistle Grove series – the first two books are out now, with the third coming out in 2023.
Payback’s a Witch is the first novel and From Bad to Cursed the second. These novels are fun reads with vivid characters, a delightfully magical setting (the town of Thistle Grove), and common themes. In the first novel, for example, Emmy grapples with coming back to her hometown after a lengthy absence and all of the memories – the good and the not-so-good – that experience can bring. I’m hoping to finish book two before Halloween, and I can’t wait for next year’s Back in a Spell!
