Come Gather 'Round Young People a Big Success

During the final days of November, RPL Librarian David Lamanno and Children's Associate Kim Dinkins traveled to each RPL location and hosted a fantastic musical storytime for little ones. Paired with props, lots of instruments, and exciting folk tunes, David and Kim entertained crowds at RPL Headquarters, East, South, and West by allowing children to explore and experience a variety of instruments and participate in some of the popular folk songs used in the program.

Come Gather 'Round Young People was a child-friendly spinoff of David's podcast, Come Gather 'Round Young People, which he hosts through RPL's Soundcloud channel. The podcast's goal is to highlight a special folk song with either a local, regional, or statewide connection while also offering a sample performance of the tune for listeners. When brainstorming ideas for the program, David knew Kim would be the best person to join him. Kim's experience with storytelling and working with youth (as well as her wonderful singing voice) helped bring the spirit of Come Gather 'Round Good People to young listeners' ears in a fun, interactive, and exciting way.

Friends of RPL Seek Donors for Summer Reading 2023

While many folks are preparing themselves for the winter holidays, the Friends of RPL are already thinking ahead to summer of 2023! Planning for Rowan Public Library's Summer Reading Program requires a lot of time, effort, and coordination, and the Friends of RPL need help to make a great Summer Reading Program happen for library customers.

Any amount a member of the public would like to donate is always helpful. To make a donation toward supporting the Summer Reading Program or to learn more, visit www.friendsofrpl.org. Folks interested in becoming Summer Reading donors at the $250, $500, or $1000 level can email Friends of RPL President Jennifer Hubbard at jen4hubbard@gmail.com for more information.

Salisbury Post Morgue Preservation Project Continues

RPL History Room Supervisor Gretchen Witt reports that the Salisbury Post Morgue Preservation Project (SPMPP) is going quite well.

The morgue serves as a holding space for thousands of
photos, news clippings, and other ephemera from the Salisbury Post's archives. The SPMPP aims to digitize and preserve a large volume of these items to make them visible and searchable by the public.

Since the last update provided in the November 2022 edition of the Friends Newsletter, the project hired ten new part time temporary library associates whose sole task is to scan documents for the project. The Friends of Rowan Public Library purchased a scanner for RPL South so the associates can scan at multiple RPL locations. With the extra associates and additional scanner, materials are able to be scanned much quicker. The entire "church" section of materials in the Salisbury Post's morgue have been completed, so the RPL South associates have moved on to scan items in the "business" section, and the HQ associates recently started scanning items in the "general" folders.

Will Morris, the part time librarian hired to lead the project, reports that volunteers and associates have already scanned over 100 gigabytes' worth of materials. The entire staff leading and assisting with the project wish to extend their appreciation to the Friends of RPL for supporting this big project.

Cards for a Cause Continues

After starting on October 8, Cards for a Cause continues on its successful pathway into December. Customers who are interested in completing cards to contribute to the campaign have until December 16 to submit cards of their own or visit an RPL location to complete a card there.

The program, which originally launched in 2015, aims to get holiday cards into the hands of service members and veterans located in the local area and beyond. RPL staff recognized how many service members and veterans may not be able to see their friends and family members during the holidays for a wide variety of reasons and wanted to share some extra cheer with them during the holiday season. When she was asked to lead the program a few years ago,  RPL Children's Services Associate Tammie Foster took the opportunity and ran with it, steadily increasing participation each year.

In 2021, Cards for a Cause generated 4,521 cards, setting a new high for the number of cards returned and delivered to service members and veterans during the program.

There are a few ways interested RPL customers can participate in Cards for a Cause:

1. Visit your most convenient RPL location to complete a card or two onsite — all locations have free card-making materials available to the public.

2. Fill out or create some cards of your own and drop them off at any RPL location.

3. Take a handy bundle of blank cards to complete at home and return them to any RPL location later.

Cards for a Cause will accept new cards through December 16. To learn more about Cards for a Cause, contact Tammie Foster at 704-216-7728.

Standard Youth Programming on Winter Hiatus

Standard weekly programming designed for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, and teens will be on hiatus beginning December 1. These regular weekly programs will return to all RPL locations on Monday, February 6, 2023.

To learn more about standard weekly programming for youth, call Youth Services Supervisor Wendy Campbell at 704-216-8258.

RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations

Ever wonder what books library staff are reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by the staff of RPL's Technical Services Department!

I recently finished reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab. The book takes place in 1714 France and tells the story of a young, desperate woman who makes a bargain to live forever. However, the twist of her bargain is that nobody she meets will ever be able to remember her. Everything changes about her cursed situation when, nearly 300 years later, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden book store, and he remembers her name.

This book was a super fun piece of romance and historical fiction. I thought it did a great job of blending what a person's legacy becomes when memories fail. I absolutely recommend placing this title on hold!

Lately, I've been revisiting one of my most favorite book series, the Miss Julia books by Ann B. Ross. Currently, I am reading Miss Julia Hits the Road, which begins with Julia's friend Sam sending her sappy poems and flowers (not to mention, he's started wearing a pair of cowboy boots). Suddenly, Sam offers her a chance to take on a big opportunity: hop on his motorcycle and complete a Poker Run with him.

Julia's longtime friend and housekeeper, Lillian, is facing an eviction from her greedy landlord. If she cannot come up with the money needed to save her home, it is going to be bulldozed. Julia decides to take her friend Sam's offer to see if she can raise some fast cash on the Poker Run and save Lillian's home from destruction, and the adventures that ensue are totally hilarious. I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a serious laugh.
