Teen Summer Reading Off to a Great Start

June Summer Reading has gone by quickly and teens ages 11-17 had a chance to learn new hobbies like wood burning, braiding friendship bracelets, and stitching camp lanyards! With the summer halfway over, Rowan Public Library is preparing for a loud and fun July with games like Capture the Flag and Human Battleship for teens to enjoy together.

Teen programs in July will be held weekly, with the culmination of teen Summer Reading being the National Teen Lock In at the end of the month. No program will be held on Tuesday, July 4 due to the holiday closure.

Teen programs are held at 3 pm each day through July 20:
Mondays — RPL South (China Grove)
Tuesdays — RPL Headquarters (Salisbury)
Wednesdays — RPL West (Cleveland)
Thursdays — RPL East (Rockwell)

The 2023 Summer Reading Program will culminate in the National Teen Lock In on Friday, July 28 from 7 — 9:30 pm at RPL South in China Grove. Lock In activities are free for teens ages 11 — 17 and will include snacks, crafts, games, ghost stories, and more. Signed permission slips are required for teens to attend; slips can be picked up at any RPL location. Contact Young Adult Librarian Amanda Brill at 704-216-8268 or Amanda.Brill@rowancountync.gov for more information or a printable copy of the permission slip.

RPL Procures Book Bike for Community Outreach

This summer, Rowan Public Library’s new Book Bike will take to the streets – or, rather, the sidewalks!

“It’s a fun way to expand outreach into the community,” said Director Melissa Oleen, who wrote the grant application that resulted in this new engagement tool. “What’s better than a book bike?”

The bike supports one of RPL’s strategic goals, to feature lifelong learning and enrich lives by providing a unique, fun, engaging, and conversational way to provide library programming in informal settings and at community events where library patrons gather.

Custom-made by Icicle Tricycles, the Book Bike has the trappings of an everyday bike, plus a rechargeable motor. It features a special cabinet to transport books, program supplies, or even a laptop to allow on-the-spot resource and technical assistance; it also accommodates an all-weather umbrella.

The Book Bike and its accoutrements, including safety gear and a cargo trailer for transportation were purchased with a State Library of NC Bright Ideas Grant, which awarded RPL $9,900 in summer 2022.

For RPL staff, the Book Bike offers a novel way of meeting community members where they are, which can be a challenge at times. This solution is right in line with Bright Ideas Grants’ aim to inspire and galvanize libraries with an opportunity that will allow for the design and implementation of creative solutions and innovative ideas.

The Book Bike and its mobile laptop were used at RPL Headquarters to promote and register participants for RPL Headquarters’ Summer Reading 2023 Kickoff, held on May 20 during Salisbury’s annual Cheerwine Festival. “The Book Bike offered a different way to bring library materials to an event like the Cheerwine Festival,” said Young Adult Librarian Amanda Brill. “The bike will definitely give RPL the opportunity to venture out of the brick-and-mortar building and do more programs out in the community.”

The bike enjoyed its inaugural program debut on Saturday, June 17, as part of a Group Hike & Food Drive held at the Fred & Alice Stanback Educational Forest & Nature Preserve. Program coordinator and librarian David Lamanno rode the bike from RPL Headquarters, located at 201 W. Fisher St., to the meeting point on 11th Street in Spencer. Participants were encouraged to bring a canned good item for a local food bank.

“The book bike handled its journey from RPL Headquarters to the nature preserve really well,” reported Lamanno. “Seeing the book bike rolling down the street garnered some friendly waves from neighbors, and I’m excited to see it become a regular feature in programming.”

“We’re excited to see the book bike interact more with the community,” said Library Services Manager Laurie Lyda. “Ideally, it will not only increase customers’ access to library resources and materials, but it will become popular with nonprofit organizers who would like RPL’s presence at their events.” Lyda added any interested parties can email inquiries about the Book Bike’s community appearances to Laurie.Lyda@rowancountync.gov.

The SLNC Bright Ideas Grant (NC-21-533) that funded RPL’s Book Bike Project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums.

"As pillars of our communities, libraries and museums bring people together by providing important programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow,” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities."

Citizen Science Program Provides Opportunities to Learn About Local Birds

Citizen Science for Everyone, a family program held at RPL Headquarters on June 3, turned out to be a successful and educational event. Twenty-eight folks gathered together in the RPL Headquarters lawn to learn more about different local bird species and how to attract them to their backyards for birdwatching.

Besides learning about different bird species, participants also learned how to participate in Citizen Science, a program that encourages members of the public to submit their own observational data to be used in real scientific studies. For example, the specific Citizen Science activity participants learned about encouraged them to record the different types of birds they spotted in their own yards — their data would be shared with professional ornithologists to track migration patterns and more.

Tim Thornton and Jolene Fox of Concord's Wild Birds Unlimited were present to educate participants about different bird species. Thornton and Fox, along with RPL staff, used a variety of apps, books, and other tools to educate the participants about local birds.

Fox also showed participants how different birds walk and talk, what to look for in birds' colorful plumage, and behaviors in eating and nesting that can help identify birds. She also explained what types of foods are best to feed and attract different wild birds into your yard. Fourteen Citizen Science kits were distributed, and participants made twenty bird seed cakes to take home with them.

To learn more about what Wild Birds Unlimited has to offer, including educational Facebook live webinars with bird expert Jolene Fox, visit https://concord.wbu.com/ online or visit their shop located in the Concord area.  To find out more about the Celebrate Urban Birds Citizen Science project and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, including fun learning games and free webinars, visit allaboutbirds.org.
