Summer Reading 2024 Activities Begin in May

It's almost time for Summer Reading fun to begin at Rowan Public Library! Summer Reading is an initiative designed to engage children, teens, and adults with educational, engaging, and exciting ways to keep reading and learning all summer long. For students, this is an excellent way to combat "summer slide," which is the loss of academic skills during prolonged breaks from school routines.

While Summer Reading programs mostly take place in June and July, there are some opportunities to enjoy library fun and get registered to participate in May.

Each RPL branch will host special events to get the Summer Reading fun started:

May 18, 11 am – 2 pm (RPL Headquarters)
Visit RPL Headquarters' front lawn during the annual Cheerwine Festival to learn about Summer Reading, get registered, and win a prize.

May 22, Noon – 3 pm (RPL West)
Visit RPL West for a kickoff event featuring yard games, feats of strength and knowledge, and a chance to get registered for Summer Reading and win a prize.

May 22, 2 – 3 pm (RPL East)

RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations

Ever wonder what books library staff are reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by the staff of RPL Headquarters' Circulation Department!

Leslie Foshee, Circulation Services

I recently finished reading Emilia Hart's Weyward. This story details the stories of three different women at different points in time, and how their struggles and challenges in life are very similar, despite happening hundreds of years apart from each other. The story contains a little witchcraft, a little magic, and a lot of resiliency. A great read highlighting the strength of women, this book also reminds the reader that there is big power within us all.

Barbara Harper, Circulation Associate

I recently finished reading The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose. This is the second book by Prose detailing the adventures of Molly the Maid, a character first introduced in Prose's The Maid. Molly's adventures begin again when a world-famous author suddenly drops dead on the hotel's tea room floor. After investigations begin, it is clear that the author was murdered...and everyone seems to be a suspect.

I highly recommend this title, especially after reading the first book in Molly's adventures. Her viewpoint and flashbacks are intriguing and add an interesting angle to the mystery story.
