Stop by any RPL branch in September for assistance with checking your voter registration status, getting registered to vote, updating your voter information, determining your polling place, and more. This year, there are significant state and local elections happening in addition to the presidential election on November 5. National Voter Registration Day is September 17, but RPL will be offering information and assistance all month long. Remember, the last day to register is Friday, October 11. September is Library Card Sign-up Month all across America! This year's "spokesbot" is Optimus Prime.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month
Celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month with Rowan Public Library and the American Library Association (ALA) this September! This nationwide celebration highlights the essential role of library cards in supporting lifelong learning for people of all ages and backgrounds. RPL's month-long celebration includes special displays and activities for new and existing cardholders alike. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been celebrated each September to mark the beginning of the school year. The ALA, RPL, and libraries nationwide annually unite to ensure everyone signs up for a library card. Each year, the ALA selects a special chair to represent Library Card Sign-up Month. In 2024, the ALA is partnering with Skybound Entertainment and Hasbro to have Optimus Prime from the Transformers as the Library Card Sign-up Month ambassador. Like Optimus Prime and all the Autobots, there is “more than meets the eye” at RPL. The library offers books, DVDs, and audiobooks for checkout, as well as interactive storytimes and programs for children, activities for teens and adults, computer access, free Wi-Fi, job search help, online classes, access to NCLIVE databases, homework help, and more. During September, library customers can enjoy special activities themed around Library Card Sign-up Month. New cardholders and existing cardholders will have opportunities to win raffle prizes in September. People who sign up for a physical card from September 3 – 30 will be automatically entered into a drawing for prizes. Similarly, existing cardholders who check out a physical item from an RPL branch in September will also be entered into a drawing for prizes. Entries for both raffles are automatic. Customers are also invited to play Library Card Sign-up Month BINGO between September 3 – 30. Stop by any RPL branch to pick up a BINGO card for your age group (ages 0-5, 6-10, 11-17, and 18+), complete the challenges on the card to make horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or four corners BINGO, and win a prize! There is a limit of two winning BINGO submissions per library card. To learn more about the prize raffles and BINGO game, call 980-432-8670. RPL strives to ensure its communities have access to both its physical and digital collections. If you don't yet have an RPL card, you can sign up for one online at any time at bit.ly/rpl_obr to gain immediate access to digital resources such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, videos, and hundreds of journals, magazines, newspapers, and databases. Customers who prefer a physical card that will allow free computer usage and access to physical materials as well as digital resources are encouraged to upgrade their digital card or apply for a physical card during operating hours at any RPL branch: RPL Headquarters (Salisbury), RPL East (Rockwell), RPL South (China Grove), or RPL West (Cleveland). To obtain a physical card, please bring a valid photo ID with a current address. For more information about obtaining a card, call 980-432-8670. For more information about RPL resources and services, visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org.

Sydney Smith Hamrick, East Branch Supervisor I recently read Rufi Thorpe's Margo's Got Money Troubles and absolutely loved it. I tend to gravitate toward books with oddball characters, and Thorpe's book is filled with them. The story follows the parenting adventures of Margo, a college freshman who accidentally becomes pregnant after a short fling with her English professor. After deciding that she will raise the baby sans-professor, drama ensues. Margo's own absent father, a former World Championship Wrestling superstar named Jynx, re-enters her life, providing much-needed support with caring for the baby as she explores some alternative ways to make a buck and support her little family. Margo explores parenthood, friendship, addiction, business, long-distance relationships, societal labels, and more throughout the story. While the tale itself is plenty dramatic and entertaining, it also makes an interesting commentary on how motherhood is viewed in today's society and what it really means to be a loving parent. I highly recommend snagging a copy of this book if you're looking for a story filled with drama and a touch of dark humor.

Kim Dinkins, Children's Library Associate I am currently re-listening to Whoopi Goldberg's Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me. The book is a heartfelt love letter from the award-winning comedian and daytime host of The View, Whoopi Goldberg, written to her beloved mom and brother, who passed away in 2010 and 2015, respectively. I can relate deeply to Goldberg's commentary about the loss of those we love during our lifetimes. I especially love the book's message that, even though we lose loved ones, we can still become our best possible selves because of their influence in our lives. The audiobook version of Goldberg's book is a must-listen. This is my second time listening to the audiobook. Goldberg's sense of comedic timing and her gift for storytelling makes it one of my favorites thus far. As a bonus, you can listen to the audiobook version for free via the Libby app.
