Local Author to Speak at RPL Headquarters
Hasta Mañana tells the story of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Miriam Valencia’s search for the drug smuggler who gave her son the drugs that killed him, while also addressing illegal immigration and the difficult task of patrolling the southwestern border. While this timeless story is based on things that could happen, it also highlights the tale of an adolescent mother who had to first raise herself, and also had to make hard decisions about the needs of and responsibilities to her child, and her parental rights. In the end, she must choose between friendship and justice.
Carolyn Wilkerson, a local resident of Salisbury, NC wishes readers will, "take away an authentic depiction of reality and its many diverse interpretations as it currently exists on all sides of border/migration management issues, considering their inextricably intertwined, social, cultural, and economic factors."
Wilkerson is a tenured professor of education and current Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness at Livingstone College. She is also a single mother whose son is now a retired U.S. Federal Agent, and he is helping her to fulfill her dream.
During this event, Wilkerson will discuss the book, explain her writing process, and lead a question and answer session. Light refreshments will be provided. To learn more about this free program, call 704-216-8248.

Finding Fashion at RPL Headquarters Reduce, reuse, recycle, and make it work, designers! Children's associates Duane DeBerry and Jacquelyn Loy were the enthusiastic hosts to the Art Fusion event held at RPL Headquarters on Tuesday, January 28. At the event, school age children were able to act as their own fashion designers, creating original wearable art using found materials. Children created paper hats, belts, and garments. They decorated tee shirts, aprons, and other clothing. Children enjoyed the opportunity to think outside of the box and express themselves. Many also took part in a fashion show where they shared their work and their reflections on the experience. For more crafting fun, school children are invited to visit RPL Headquarters for Art in the Afternoon (formerly known as Noodlehead Art) on Thursdays at 4 pm. Art in the Afternoon is designed for 1st to 5th grade children, though all are welcome. To learn more about Art in the Afternoon, available at all branches, contact 980-432-8670. Each branch adds a distinctive flair to their after school art program and all include literacy and art components.

Sydney Smith Hamrick, East Branch Supervisor I recently read Someone in the Attic by Andrea Mara, and it heebied my jeebies. I really enjoy thrillers and horror stories – most of what I read and watch fall into those categories – and this particular book really did something special to creep me out. The story details Julia, who decides to make an international move after a string of personal issues in her former California city. She and her two children move into a new home and begin settling into their new surroundings, much to the displeasure of her teenage daughter and young son. In their new super-luxe gated community, Julia finally feels safe enough to relax until she notices something weird in a TikTok video her daughter shows her. The setting of the video, which shows a masked person exiting an attic, seems oddly familiar...because it is Julia's attic. The story explores the phenomenon of phrogging, or the act of a person secretly living in another person's home, completely undetected. While there are other plot points, such as family tensions, disloyal friends, and romantic disputes, the story is tied together by a fear of intrusion. Mara did a wonderful job creating an intense, fast-paced story thick with an atmosphere of discomfort that will feel familiar if you've ever felt like you were being watched. I highly recommend this title for folks who enjoy horror, thrillers, and true crime-adjacent fiction.
