RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations

Ever wonder what books library staff have been reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by the Circulation Staff at RPL Headquarters!

book cover image of We Used to Live Here featuring a distorted image of a large white and blue house

Alexus House, Library Associate

I recently read We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer. A young couple named Charlie and Eve move into a new house across the country to work on flipping the property. One night, a family shows up at their door where the dad insists that he used to live there as a child. The longer the strange family stays at the house, inexplicable and weird things start to occur, like the daughter going missing and a ghostly presence appearing in the basement. As the night progresses, the family can't seem to take the hint that Charlie and Eve want the visit to be over. Slowly, Eve begins to lose her hold on reality, so is something just awfully wrong with this family...or is it just Eve making things up?

I am not an avid horror reader, and I spook fairly easily (I had to read the majority of this book during the day because of that!), but this book has changed my perspective on the genre. Not only is this book unnerving, but it consistently makes you think about what is real or not. Overall, I highly recommend this book for both lovers of horror and those like myself who are first time readers of the genre!

Cover image of Variation featuring fish swimming through a pond and flowers floating on the water's surface

Leslie Foshee, Circulation Services Supervisor

I recently finished Variation by Rebecca Yarros. In the story, elite ballerina Allie Rousseau is no stranger to pressure. With her mother's eyes always watching, perfection is expected, no matter the cost. But when an injury jeopardizes all she's sacrificed for, Allie returns to her summer home to heal and recover, but the memories she's tried to forget rush in and threaten to take her under. Then enters Hudson: as a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Hudson Ellis knows that hesitation can mean the difference between life and death. He's always prided himself on being in the right place at the right time, especially when it came to Allie Rousseau — until the night he left for basic training. After the biggest regret of his life, the secrets he keeps mean he can never be with the one woman he wants more than anything.

This book was a steamy romance with complicated family dynamics and an engaging storyline. Rebecca Yarros is one of my favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint!

Cover image of The One featuring a fingerprint in blood

Barbara Harper, Library Associate

I recently finished listening to the audiobook version of John Marrs' The One. Consider this: what if you could find your perfect match through a DNA test? This book follows five different couples as in the future they have discovered a DNA gene that can be used to find your perfect partner. John Marrs does an excellent job exploring the many secrets and complications that could arise. The multiple points of view are very intriguing. Also, if you like audiobooks, it is a great listen as well!

Book cover image of The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart featuring a man and a woman dressed in late 1800s fashion

Kaitlyn Tysinger, Library Courier

I recently finished The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen. In the story, Amelie is an anonymous columnist who answers lonely heart letters for The Marriage Gazette. She plays matchmaker to two of her anonymous lonely heart letter writers and decides to secretly observe their blind date.

To her surprise, complications ensue when there is a police detective who joins in and a murder investigation ensues!  Believing Amelie's social connections and clever observations to be an asset to the case, the detective invites her to join forces and investigate the murder of a young lady.

I would recommend this book to other readers because it is a historical romance with a great twist. This book was a cozy murder mystery with romance and humor that makes it lighthearted enough for those who like a not-so-serious murder mystery. This book was unexpected, but quickly became a new favorite!

Cover image of Flowers for Algernon featuring a white mouse

Isabelle Roach, Library Associate

I recently read Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon. The book is about a mentally disabled man who is the subject of a strange experiment to increase his intelligence. The only previously successful subject is a now-genius lab rat named Algernon. The book is told through the perspective of the man through his journal entries.

The main character in this book is one of, if not the, most compelling main characters I have ever read. On top of that, the concept of the story is very interesting because it involves a lot of moral questions about not only medical and science experiments, but also the way people treat each other.
