Two Exciting Summer Podcast Opportunities

The latest episode of Come Gather 'Round Good People released on Monday, June 24. The podcast focuses on folk music and explores the history behind various songs with local, regional, and statewide connections. Inn the latest installment, the podcast takes a journey through the Bahamas to keep with this year's Summer Reading theme, "Adventure Begins at Your Library." The episode, titled Hoist the John B. Sails – The Regretful Adventure of the Sloop John B, explores a song about a fateful journey through the Bahamas that eventually entered the pop culture sphere as a Beach Boys hit.

Library customers are also invited to participate in an upcoming special release episode of the podcast. Librarian and podcast creator David Lamanno is collecting recordings of people sharing short stories about their greatest adventures. The recordings will be compiled into a special edition episode in honor of Summer Reading 2024. To share a short tale of your own, simply record yourself using your own device or contact David to schedule a recording session at RPL. To ensure there is enough time for all participants to be included, recordings must be kept under two minutes each. To learn more, to send your own audio file, or schedule a recording session at the library, contact David at David.Lamanno@rowancountync.gov or 704-216-8229.

Volunteers Wanted for Stories by the Millstream 2024

July may just be getting started, but RPL is already on the lookout for volunteers to assist with Stories by the Millstream 2024! Stories by the Millstream is an annual storytelling festival held in the fall for Rowan County second graders and their teachers. Classes visit the park and listen to two local/regional storytellers, and then hear a featured storyteller perform. This year marks the 22nd year of this event bringing the magic of live storytelling to young children, and RPL needs volunteers to help make this happen.

Volunteers would assist with leading classes of children to and from their various storytelling sites from approximately 8:30 am to 1 pm on Thursday, September 26. A free catered lunch will be provided at the end of the event. To learn more about this volunteering opportunity, contact David Lamanno at David.Lamanno@rowancountync.gov or 704-216-8229. Submit a volunteer application at bit.ly/RPLVolunteer.

RPL Reads: Staff Book Recommendations

Ever wonder what books library staff have been reading? Check out some hot reads recommended by RPL staff. This month, recommendations are provided by the staff of RPL West Branch!

Susan Colosanti, Library Page

I recently finished Kristin Hannah's newest release, The Women. This book tells the story of a young nurse named Frances "Frankie" McGrath who decides to volunteer her services in Vietnam when her brother enlists. She dreams of seeing her picture on her father's Hero Wall, which honors family members who have served in the military.

Frankie's experience is terrifying and she is horrified by the realities of war. To make her experience even worse, upon returning to the United States, she learns that her father refuses to recognize her service. The America Frankie knows also seems to have changed drastically; Americans are extremely divided, with protests erupting left and right.

The reader will leave this story with a picture of the horrors of the war, as well as the struggles faced by soldiers both during the war and after returning to America. Though fictionalized Frankie only sheds light on one woman's experience in the Vietnam War, her story is highly reflective of the time period, highlighting often forgotten experiences of women and their contributions to war efforts.

Paul Birkhead, Librarian

I recently read C.J. Box's Three-Inch Teeth. In this twenty-fourth installment of C.J. Box’s popular Joe Pickett series, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett is caught up in a murder mystery. In the beautiful yet harsh environment of the Bighorn Mountains, a serial killer is on the loose.

On top of trying to hunt down a serial killer, a rampaging grizzly keeps killing people, and Joe’s friends and family are being targeted. Could it be that this bear is sporting not only a grudge but magical powers as well?

I always enjoy the Joe Pickett novels. The descriptions of Wyoming never fail to put me in the woods with Joe and his pal Nate Romanowski. If you like mystery novels that take place out in nature, give this series a try. Open Season (2001) is the first in the series.

cover image of The Wild Robot featuring an image of a robot standing alone in a dense forest

Melissa Gephart, Children's Librarian

I recently finished The Wild Robot series by Peter Brown. This trilogy contains three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The plot of the first book is all about a robot who is stranded on an island with no clue where she is or how she got there. After surviving some scary situations involving terrible storms and bear attacks, she slowly begins to adapt to the wild. Eventually, she learns how to communicate with the animals there and slowly befriends them, earning their trust and acceptance.

These books tell an amazing story about endurance and compassion. As an added bonus, if you read the series and love the books, they are soon to be adapted into a major motion picture released in September.
Book cover image of the final girl support group featuring a blood-covered folding chair

Will Morris, Librarian

Imagine a world where the plot of every horror movie was real, had really happened. In that world, “final girls” – women heroines who are the last survivors of horror movie villain rampages – are objects of media obsession and pop culture icons. But what happens when the final girls start disappearing one-by-one? Is some sinister plot afoot or just paranoia on the part of people who have already experienced more than enough trauma for one lifetime? That’s the set up for Grady Hendrix’s 11th novel, The Final Girl Support Group.

Final Girl Support Group is a great read, a page turner that doesn’t take itself or its premise too seriously. The characters and their situation will still pull on your heart strings. Hendrix’s parallels between fictional horror movie slashers and real life contemporary mass shootings are hard to miss. This was a popcorn novel with whodunit flair that nonetheless manages to be thought-provoking.

Book cover image of Saving Savannah featuring a woman looking outward into a bay with ships

Sara McCraw, Library Associate

I recently finished Surviving Savannah by Patti Callahan. This is a historical fiction novel based on accounts of the passengers who survived the wreck of the Pulaski. The story intertwines the life of a professor in present-day Savannah who is researching the wreck's history and two women who were on the ship.

I was not familiar with the history behind this shipwreck and learned a lot about what these families experienced and how they survived many tragedies. Callahan's book is a story of forgiveness and reconciliation in the midst of great loss. After enjoying this book, I would like to see Savannah and learn more about the history there.
