Who Can Volunteer at Rowan Public Library?

Adults and teenagers ages 13+ are welcome to submit an application to volunteer at Rowan Public Library. If you aren't 13 yet, check back with us after your 13th birthday! 

Current volunteering opportunities are listed below. Teenagers ages 13-17 are welcome to apply for opportunities listed as "teen friendly" in their descriptions. 

Current Volunteering Opportunities

Job: Picking up trash and debris
Location: RPL-Headquarters (Salisbury)
Duties: A volunteer is need to spend thirty minutes to one hour, Monday-Saturday walking the grounds of library headquarters picking up trash (cups, napkins, cigarette butts, wrappers etc.) and moving fallen branches and twigs to the curb.  Volunteers will be required to sign in and out at the Circulation desk.  Volunteers will be required to wear a safety vest and gloves at all times while volunteering.  Vest, gloves, 5-gallon bucket, trash bags and trash grabber will be provided by the library.
Teen Friendly?: Yes, this opportunity is open to volunteers ages 13+
Time/Duration: Year round, Monday-Saturday.  Volunteers may request specific days. Volunteers will be required to arrive at a set time of their choosing between 8:30am and 4:00pm on their assigned days.

Job: Volunteer Scanner
Location: RPL-Headquarters (Salisbury)
Duties:   Multiple volunteer positions are needed to prepare items for scanning, which includes proper handling of historic photographs, negatives, documents, brochures and other scan-able archival objects.  Requires the ability to alphabetize, type with accuracy, and operate computers and computer software; use library flatbed scanner and other library equipment to produce accurate, high-quality digital files; identify and organize digital files.
Preferred Skills:  A knowledge or interest in Rowan County/local history; the ability to follow precise directions and remain attentive while performing repetitive tasks; intermediate computer skills.
Teen-Friendly?:   Yes, however this opportunity is limited to volunteers ages 16+.  
Time/Duration:  It is anticipated that these volunteer opportunities will continue over an 18-month period.   The hours can be completed over multiple 3-4 hour shifts during library hours. Volunteers will not be required to volunteer for this length of time; the length of time for each shift and duration of appointment will be established between the volunteer and History Room supervisor in advance for efficient scheduling.   
Notes: An informational meeting will be held on Saturday, March 26th in Stanback Auditorium at 1:00 for anyone interested in participating in the project.   Potential volunteers can apply before this meeting.
