Current Volunteering Opportunities
Job: Bookshop Sorting Room Helper
Location: Friends of RPL Second Saturday Bookshop Address: West End Plaza 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd W, Salisbury, NC 28147, Unit C-7 Duties: A volunteer is needed to work a shift the second Saturday of every month. Shifts are typically 10 am to 1 pm or 1 to 3 pm, though hours may be flexible. Duties include receiving and sorting boxes of donations, loading carts, and shelving books in the store. Shifts will involve standing for extended periods; pushing, pulling, and lifting 30-pound boxes; pushing and pulling carts of books up to 100-pounds; and stooping and bending to pick up materials. Preferred Skills: Knowledge of broad genres (fiction, non-fiction, juvenile, etc.) preferred. Teen Friendly?: Yes. This opportunity is open to volunteers ages 17 and older. Time/Duration: Year round, second Saturday of each month. Volunteers will be required to arrive at their designated shift time and work the duration of their assigned shift.
Job: Picking up trash and debris
Location: RPL-Headquarters (Salisbury) Duties: A volunteer is needed to spend thirty minutes to one hour, Monday-Saturday walking the grounds of library headquarters picking up trash (cups, napkins, cigarette butts, wrappers etc.) and moving fallen branches and twigs to the curb. Volunteers will be required to sign in and out at the Circulation desk. Volunteers will be required to wear a safety vest and gloves at all times while volunteering. Vest, gloves, 5-gallon bucket, trash bags and trash grabber will be provided by the library. Teen Friendly?: Yes, this opportunity is open to volunteers ages 13+ Time/Duration: Year round, Monday-Saturday. Volunteers may request specific days. Volunteers will be required to arrive at a set time of their choosing between 8:30am and 4:00pm on their assigned days.
Job: Volunteer Scanner for the Salisbury Post Morgue Preservation Project
Location: RPL Headquarters (Salisbury) Duties: Multiple volunteer positions are needed to prepare items for scanning, which includes proper handling of historic photographs, negatives, documents, brochures and other scan-able archival objects. Requires the ability to alphabetize, type with accuracy, and operate computers and computer software; use library flatbed scanner and other library equipment to produce accurate, high-quality digital files; identify and organize digital files. Preferred Skills: A knowledge or interest in Rowan County/local history; the ability to follow precise directions and remain attentive while performing repetitive tasks; intermediate computer skills. Teen-Friendly?: Yes, however this opportunity is limited to volunteers ages 16+. Time/Duration: It is anticipated that these volunteer opportunities will continue over an 18-month period. The hours can be completed over multiple 3-4 hour shifts during library hours. Volunteers will not be required to volunteer for this length of time; the length of time for each shift and duration of appointment will be established between the volunteer and History Room supervisor in advance for efficient scheduling.
Job: Assisting in RPL Headquarters' Children's Room
Location: RPL Headquarters (Salisbury) Duties: A volunteer is needed to help move, shelve, and shelf read books in the children’s room. The volunteer will also help with changes to displays as part of the relocation project. Preferred Skills: Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and basic computer skills required. Teen Friendly?: Yes, the opportunity is open to volunteers ages 13+. Time/Duration: This volunteer opportunity can be completed preferably in the evenings or arranged on Saturdays. The current project will take one month to complete.
