Rabies Vaccination Program

Why rabies vaccines are important

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It’s most commonly spread through the bite of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, rabies is nearly always fatal — but it’s completely preventable through vaccination.

North Carolina law requires that all dogs, cats, and ferrets four months of age and older be vaccinated against rabies. Keeping your pets up-to-date on their rabies shots not only protects them — it protects your family, neighbors, and our community.

New! Low-cost rabies vaccines for Rowan County residents

Rowan County Animal Services is excited to now offer low-cost rabies vaccinations to the public as an ongoing service.

  • Cost: $10 per vaccine
  • Type: 1-year rabies vaccine (if you would like a 3-year vaccine, please see your full-service veterinarian after your pet’s current vaccine expires)
  • Scheduling: By appointment only — call us to book your spot. (704) 216-7768 (option 1)

This program helps ensure more pets in our community stay protected and compliant with state law.

Rabies Vaccination Requirements

All dogs, cats, and ferrets over four months of age are required by North Carolina law to have a current rabies vaccination.

  • All dogs must be on a secure leash, and all cats must be in their own individual pet carrier (one cat per carrier).
  • Owners are required to present a valid ID, such as a driver’s license, at the time of service.
  • We reserve the right to refuse service if an animal’s behavior or condition poses a risk to our staff or to the animal itself.

Please note:
If your pet comes into contact with a rabid animal within the first 28 days after their initial rabies vaccination, they will still be considered unvaccinated, since it takes about 28 days for their body to build protective antibodies.
