Our Department's four divisions offer unique opportunities for individuals seeking to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment. Our department utilizes state of the art equipment and vehicles and is a leader in regional public safety services. We're located along Interstate 85 in the Piedmont section of North Carolina. The county of 136,000 is located about 40 miles north of Charlotte, 20 minutes from the Charlotte Motor Speedway, site of major NASCAR racing, and about 35 miles southwest of Winston-Salem, 40 miles southwest of Greensboro.
Applications
We maintain an open application process, periodically holding several employment assessment centers throughout the year for both full- and part-time positions. All potential employees must complete the online job application. Applicants selected for interview process will have their references and driving records checked. If an offer of employment is made, further physical examination and substance abuse testing will be performed.

Communications System
The county utilizes a state-of-the-art centralized communications system for all public safety agencies with telecommunications nationally certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), and a modern digital 800MHz, 20-channel trunked radio communications system.
Schedule
Employees are hired by the county and work a non-rotating 12-hour shift schedule.
Employment Steps
Applicants are placed into a pool and are given an entrance exam and an oral interview and then placed into a secondary level pool for employment consideration as vacancies occur. Individuals selected for secondary level interviews will have their references and records checked. If an offer of employment is made, substance abuse testing will also be performed.

EMS Division
Our EMS Division, the largest of 3 in the department, is a paramedic level ALS provider. The county-operated service utilizes a single-tier ALS system augmented by medical responders through our local fire departments.
Full-time candidates are selected from those applicants with current paramedic credentials or those paramedic students enrolled in a paramedic program and scheduled to graduate. For part-time candidates, applications are selected and considered from EMT, AEMT and Paramedic credentialed individuals. First consideration is given to those with paramedic certification or those who are pursuing that level of certification, followed by AEMT and then EMT. All applications are graded based on objective factors and sorted, then ordered based on factors related to certification.
Division field personnel work 12-hour non-rotating shifts.
Emergency Management Division
Our Emergency Management Division provides preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery planning activities for the entire county including the municipalities. Encouraging multi-agency and jurisdictional functions, the Division also acts as the central coordination and distribution point for Homeland Security planning and related activities as well. Applications for this division are taken only on an as needed basis.
Fire Division
Our Fire Division has responsibility to coordinate the County’s fire and rescue services, and to provide fire investigation, inspections, and hazardous permitting services and assistance in most areas of the county. Fire prevention and preparedness information/training is also provided to citizens and businesses by division staff. Applications for this division are taken only on an as needed basis.
